About the Area

North Wales has a lot to offer, whether you are a thrill seeker, interested in the local heritage, or just looking for a relaxing break.  Glan Alaw is ideally suited as a base to explore from and provides a welcoming atmosphere for relaxing evenings and to plan your next day.

We keep lots of brochures at the cottage, but have included some of the attractions here to whet your appetite.

Crib Goch
Mountain walking, scrambling and climbing
The cottage is less than an hour away from some of the highest mountains and most beautiful scenery in the Snowdonia National Park.
Beaches
The quiet sandy beaches of Anglesey are easily accessible.  There is also more rugged coastal scenery on the Anglesey Coastal Path and the stony beach at Penmon is worth a visit
Aberffraw
Lake Padarn
Lakes
The local natural lakes, such as Llyn Padarn, near Llanberis are ideal for swimming and generally mucking about on the water.
The plunge pools next to the Watkin Path are very refreshing after a walk up Snowdon.
Boating
There is plenty of opportunity for boating, whether it is kayaking and canoeing on the local lakes or sailing on the Straits.  There is even a local power boat membership scheme (www.seawake.co.uk) through which you can have unlimited access to Seawake’s fleet of boats without the hassle of ownership.

Caernarfon Castle
Cultural History
The area is steeped in a rich cultural history, from the Druids and standing stones on Anglesey, to the tales of the Mabinogion and Arthurian legend.
The local castles of Dolbadarn, Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Conwy are well worth a visit.
Industrial History
The geology of the area has led to a diverse history of mineral extraction, from slate quarrying to gold and copper mining.
Many sites, like the Llechwedd slate caverns, do guided underground tours.

Days out
You could spend your whole holiday on days out and still leave plenty for your next visit!
The Anglesey Circuit at Ty Croes offers spectator sport, track days and race training, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway is a great way to see the area and the Anglesey Sea Zoo is fantastic for kids (and adults!).
Near to the cottage
Llyn Alaw (photo on right) is a short walk away along a public footpath through fields.  The local pub is The Black Lion which does good food and is only a 10 minute drive away.  Lynnon Mill, Anglesey's only working windmill (complete with cafe!) is about a half hour walk from the Pigsty.
